Why They Chose Her: Understanding Criminal Targeting

NAAGA President Philip Smith’s recent YouTube video, “Black Women Are Increasingly Under Attack & 13,000 Are Missing Since 2024,” has sparked an important conversation throughout our community—generating more than 70,000 views and hundreds of shares.

His message is a sobering reminder that personal safety often begins long before a physical confrontation. Criminals frequently observe behavior, surroundings, routines, and perceived vulnerabilities before selecting a target. Understanding those warning signs can help us recognize danger earlier and respond before a situation escalates.

This conversation is not about blaming victims. The responsibility for violence always belongs to the person committing it. It is about equipping women with information, awareness, and practical tools that may reduce their exposure to danger.

If you have not already watched President Smith’s message, we encourage you to view it before joining us for this important discussion.

Continuing the Conversation

Building on President Smith’s message, this month’s Queens of Defense meeting will explore “Why They Chose Her: Understanding Criminal Targeting.”

During the discussion, we will examine:

  • How criminals identify and select potential victims

  • Situational and behavioral vulnerabilities that may attract unwanted attention

  • Common warning signs and pre-incident behaviors

  • How distractions, routines, and environments can affect personal safety

  • Practical strategies for reducing your risk

  • The role of preparedness, boundaries, and confident decision-making

The goal is not to live in fear—it is to move through the world with greater awareness and intention. Situational awareness gives you time, and time gives you options.

Join Queens of Defense for an honest, practical conversation designed to help women recognize potential threats, strengthen their personal-safety habits, and make informed decisions before danger gets too close.

Stay alert. Trust your instincts. Be prepared.
