On February 28, 2025, the Bass Reeves Gun Club (BRGC) received a distinguished honor at the Georgia House of Representatives in celebration of its 10th anniversary. This recognition marks a decade of unwavering commitment to firearm education, community empowerment, and responsible gun ownership.

Back in 2020, February 28th officially proclaimed "National African American Gun Association Day" at the State Capitol, after being honored by Georgia State Representative Doreen Carter , with support from State Representatives Derrick Johnson, Kim Schofield and Patty Bentley, highlighting the work that NAAGA does in the community. State Representative Doreen Carter presented the honor, highlighting the club’s dedication to shifting the conversation around firearms toward safety, education, and accountability. “Rather than focusing solely on the right to own a gun, we need to prioritize responsible training, secure storage, and policies that keep our communities safe. BRGC exemplifies this by not only educating gun owners but also fostering a culture of accountability and awareness,” said Rep. Carter.

The ceremony reflected on the club’s significant contributions, including:

  • Empowering Women: Through monthly Ladies Day Out! events, BRGC has trained over 1,500 women in firearm safety and marksmanship.

  • Youth Firearm Education: The club’s Youth Firearms Education Program has provided free training to nearly 100 young people and their guardians, emphasizing safe firearm handling and decision-making. Over 1,000 gun locks have been distributed in partnership with Project Child Safe.

  • Gun Security Initiatives: BRGC has played a role in the Protect What Protects You campaign, a collaboration between NAAGA and the Firearms Security Alliance, educating gun owners on firearm security to prevent theft-related crimes.

  • Higher Education Support: The BRGC Aiming for College Excellence Scholarship continues to invest in the future, with $16,000 in scholarships awarded to date and an additional $2,000 planned for 2025.

The recognition builds upon BRGC’s past honors, acknowledging its impact on community safety and education. With a goal of expanding Metro-Atlanta membership to 1,000 responsible and well-trained individuals, BRGC remains committed to developing informed gun owners and preserving the historical significance of African American firearm ownership.

This milestone is not just a reflection of BRGC’s past but a stepping stone toward even greater impact in the future.
