BRGC Spotlighted by NewsOne: Redefining Black Gun Ownership Through Training and Community

The Bass Reeves Gun Club was recently featured by NewsOne for its role in the growing movement of responsible Black firearm ownership. The feature highlights how BRGC is creating a welcoming space where members can develop practical skills, build confidence, and train alongside people who share their commitment to safety and self-protection.

Founded as the Metro Atlanta chapter of the National African American Gun Association (NAAGA), BRGC welcomes everyone from first-time firearm owners to experienced shooters, military veterans, and law enforcement professionals. Through firearms fundamentals, concealed-carry instruction, defensive rifle courses, and advanced training, the club helps members become safer and more proficient firearm owners.

BRGC President Larry Brown Jr. explained that representation is an important part of the club’s impact. Traditional shooting environments do not always reflect the communities they serve. BRGC offers members a place where they can feel comfortable learning, asking questions, and growing among supportive peers.

The NewsOne feature also shines a light on Black women, one of the fastest-growing groups of firearm owners. BRGC members shared how concerns about personal safety led them to seek professional training—and how the club became much more than a place to shoot. For some, BRGC has provided confidence, meaningful relationships, and a community where they can fully be themselves.

That sense of purpose is rooted in the legacy of the club’s namesake, Bass Reeves. Born into slavery, Reeves later became one of the first Black deputy U.S. marshals west of the Mississippi River. During his remarkable career, he became known for his courage, marksmanship, resourcefulness, and ability to build relationships across communities.

Today, BRGC proudly carries that legacy forward by promoting responsible firearm ownership, education, proficiency, service, and respect for the Second Amendment.

The NewsOne feature confirms what our members experience firsthand: BRGC is not simply a gun club. It is a community dedicated to helping people become informed, prepared, and confident protectors of themselves and their families.
