A legendary civil rights activist, knew firsthand the threats Black communities faced. She famously said, “I keep a shotgun in every corner of my bedroom,” highlighting her commitment to defending her home and loved ones against violence. She often faced violent intimidation while registering Black voters, including a drive-by shooting at her friend’s home. Hamer’s advocacy for self-defense underscores a broader, often overlooked history of Black Americans using firearms to safeguard their families and communities in the face of systemic oppression. Her story reminds us that protecting oneself is both a personal and political act.
